Hardcover. Condition: Good+. First American Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy, but with extensive spotting and surface deterioration to the spine cloth (extending a little bit onto the front and rear covers); ownership signature of screenwriter Daniel Taradash on front endpaper]. The second of only three full-length novels by an author better known for his short stories, many of which have been adapted for television, notably on the anthology series "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." Originally published in England under the title "Tom's A-Cold," it's a dystopian tale set in "a strangely terrifying England of the not far distant future, a country laid waste and demoralized by continued international wars, class struggles, and civil strife. Towns and cities have been obliterated. Civilization has collapsed." It's set in 1995 in a rural valley, where a group of people, living "in constant fear of marauders and pillagers," decides that rebuiding their devastated society requires "more women," and sets out to raid a neighboring community to acquire same. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.
