David Hays (1928-1995) was a pioneer in these fields; here we offer an important and very early technical report, and Hays' classic monograph. At the Rand Corporation Hays worked on machine translation, specifically on the translation of Russian to English. Basic Principles (1960) introduces 'dependency parsing' - a powerful technique for defining word-relations derived from studies by Lucien Tesnière. Hays' 1967 textbook is the first on computational linguistics, and brings his important work on 'dependency grammar' into a broad survey of computational techniques, linguistic theory and computer applications. The book is also notable for containing the first substantial treatment of the earliest algorithm in computational linguistics - the so-called 'CYK Algorithm'. Both very good condition: 1960 technical report - cover lightly marked; faded internally but overall in excellent condition; 1967 monograph - pristine cloth binding; internally clean and bright throughout; dust-jacket very good with some wear to edges.
