Dawson (1820-1899) was a vociferous opponent of Darwin's evolutionary theories and biology, but still credited with being the first Canadian scientist of international renown, generally credited with discovering the lost village of "Hochelaga" and known for uncovering a fossil of Hylonomus lyelli (earliest known reptile). The Dawson Brothers firm was owned and operated by Samuel Edward Dawson (1833-1916), and his brother William Valentine, from 1850-1889, not only publishing, but also working as fine bookbinders, served as news agents, and eveb operated a stationery and blank-book factory.
