There are rumors he performed the surgery on himself. Either way, the work and documentation of said work is great in this book, and at one point you get a big eyeful of the surgery's results. From 1949 through 1967, Bess showed at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York, alongside artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. There is an article about Wisconsin indy filmmaker-actor Mark Borchardt laid in (with a margin note at mention of Lesy's photobook _Wisconsin Death Trap_).
