Five Letters from Author Tom Wolfe to Salt Lake City Artist and Educator Pat Eddington, 1979-2001 Archive includes one autograph letter signed and four typed letters signed, plus one envelope (1979) with Wolfe's name logo embossed on envelope and letterhead. Three typed letters on printed Wolfe letterhead. All with previous folds. Fine Condition. Envelope roughly opened on end. Tom Wolfe (1930-2018) was best known for his novel "Bonfires of the Vanities" and "The Right Stuff" his 1979 book which looked at NASA's Project Mercury program and the 7 astronauts who were in the program. Wolfe earlier published " The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" which vaulted him into fame and was emblematic of authors writing about counter-cultural themes in the 60's and 70's. Patrick Eddington was a beloved Junior and Senior High School art teacher in Salt Lake City. Eddington also was a professional artist with many of his works featuring feline subjects. Eddington's former students fondly recall Pat's love of rock and roll, which pulsed from the classroom. Former student and artist Trent Call recalled "Pat loved collaboration, sharing ideas and pretty much just making things." An extension, he says, "of his consistent written correspondence with artists around the world." These letters, spanning 22 years, provide a snippet into Eddington's correspondence and Wolfe's quick and witty replies. In one note, dated July 15, 2001, Wolfe writes, "I have no interesting cat stories, even though I had a cat many years ago. But the idea of drawing a cat does interest me. I'll try to see what I can come up with. Good luck with your cats, Tom Wolfe". Several months later Eddington apparently reminded Wolfe about the cat drawing and Wolfe replies, "those fabulous art supplies had been buried near the bottom of a stack of unopened book mailers.if this doesn't spur me on to felinity, nothing will." We have no record if Tom Wolfe ever sent Pat Eddington a cat drawing. Earlier letters reflect on the difficulties of teaching, and Wolfe's evident reply to Eddington asking about the movie treatment for "The Right Stuff". "I know very little about the movie THE RIGHT STUFF, other than that it is scheduled to come out next fall." Wolfe signed all five letters, several in his famous bombastic style.
