Add to basket4to; original blue boards; no dustwrapper; pp. 112; profusely illustrated with period photographs. Edges of boards very slightly rubbed; trace of spotting to top edge; gift inscription to front free endpaper; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition. "As the title indicates, the aim of this book is to give, largely in photographic form, something of the flavour of an epoch that ended - in Cape Town as everywhere else - on 22 January 1901, when Queen Victoria passed away. More than three-quarters of a century have gone by since then and there are few Capetonians still living who can, save as small children, recall her times. The camera, however, still leaves us imperishable records of the city and its environs, and of its inhabitants: their manners, customs, styles of living, modes of transport, entertainments, pastimes and sports. Despite the crude apparatus of those times, the quality was often startlingly good as proved in the hundred and thirty pictures of this book. To supplement what they show, I have described many aspects of old Cape Town about which historians usually remain silent - its sanitation, smells, hotels, places of refreshment and so on. Many South Africans will find personal links in these pages through parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.".
