Hardcover. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 24 cm, 152 pages. Illustrations. Notes. Index. Ex-library with the usual library markings. Ex-Los Alamos National Laboratory library. Some sticker residue, wear and soiling noted. Derived from a symposium held 14 October 1982 at the National Academy of Sciences, and jointly sponsored by the Academy and by the National Air and Space Museum. Examines the motivations for the space program and analyzes the role of science, industry, and the government in the exploration of outer space. Among the contributors are Frank Press, John Logsdon, Bernard Schriever, Amitai Erzioni, Simon Ramo, Freeman Dyson, and Philip Morrison. The Symposium addressed The Motivations for Space Activity, The Practical Dimensions of Space and Science and Space. Dr. Allan A. Needell, curator emeritus, earned a BA in physics from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University. From 1978-81 he served as associate historian at the Center for History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics, where he had responsibility for a project to investigate and recommend ways of identifying and preserving documents relating to the U.S. Department of Energy's research laboratories. Dr. Needell joined the National Air and Space Museum in 1981 with a specialization in Apollo artifacts. From 1999 to 2002, Dr. Needell served as chairman of the Space History Division. During that period he wrote articles on the history of physics, the origins of U.S. national laboratories, and government-science relations. He has edited The First 25 Years in Space: A Symposium. Dr. Needell is a curator emeritus. These proceedings, based on a symposium which examined the motivations, implications, accomplishments, and social impacts of the first 25 years in space, are presented in four sections. Section 1 includes an introduction by John Logsdon, a paper titled "Motivations for the Space Program: Past and Future" by Harvey Brooks, and comments by Bernard Schriever (considering military involvement in space after World War II) and Amitai Etzioni. Section 2 includes an introduction by Walter Sullivan, a paper titled "The Practical Dimensions of Space" by Simon Ramo, and comments by Roger Chevalier (considering the five issues raised in the paper) and Edwin Mansfield (focusing on the economic and commercial implications of the space program). Section 3 includes an introduction by Gerald Holton, a paper titled "Science and Space" by Freeman J. Dyson, and comments by Hendrik Van de Hulst and Gerald J. Wasserburg. Also included in each of these sections is a discussion related to the topic area under consideration. Concluding remarks by Philip Morrison are presented in the final section.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. Amsterdam: North-Holland, 1960-1979, the first 10 years, MISSING VOLUME V. Near fine first editions in very good unclipped dust jackets. Copies of Alfred O. Neir with his stamp and the label: "Property of Upper Atmosphere Physics Group Purchased with funds from NASA NsG-286-63 (0641-5554). The editor, Hildegard Korf Kallmann-Bijl, was the first chair of COSPAR, and "one of the most active pioneers in her examination of the physics of high atmosphere for the flight calculations of satellites."To the surprise of many, the USSR launched Sputnik 1 as the first artificial Earth satellite on 4 October 1957, heralding the opening of the Space Age. The following year, International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) established the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). COSPAR?s first Space Science Symposium was organized in Nice in January 1960. The first 10 years of Space Research featured pioneering work and scientific exchange. COSPAR's mission was to foster cooperation between space scientists of all countries in conjunction with the International Geophysical Year (IGY), July 1957 to December 1958, which was conducted to study the earth and its environment. Sixty-seven countries participated in IGY projects. It encompassed 14 Earth Science fields The IGY established the World Data Center system that is still in place today and is the forerunner and foundation of Climate Change research. 2025 marks the 40th year of the Space Research Symposium. COPIES OF: Alfred Otto Carl Nier (1911-1994) who pioneered the development of mass spectrometry. He was the first to use mass spectrometry to isolate uranium-235 used to demonstrate that 235U could undergo fission. From 1943 to 1945, he worked with the Manhattan Project. Most of the spectrographs used for monitoring uranium separations were designed by Nier. After the war, he returned to Minnesota where he worked on geochronology, the upper atmosphere, space science and noble gases, designing the miniature mass spectrometers used by the Viking Landers to sample the atmosphere of Mars.
