Cover design by Christopher McKimmie.…Malouf's fifth solo poetry collection. ***A very good copy in illustrated glossy card covers. Edges of covers just very slightly rubbed and creased, with a crease to the top corner tips of the last few pages. The orange colour of the back cover has unevenly faded to yellow at the top edge and near the spine. No inscriptions. Pages clean and white. 58 pages. 216mm x 14 mm. ***'"First Things Last" is David Malouf's first collection of poems to be published in this country. In it he moves back to the Deception Bay of his childhood to explore questions of time, memory and continuity, and in a series of Odes towards the end of the book he turns to music and to Italy for their sustaining images of wholeness. The centre of the collection, "The Crab Feast", is a lyrical-dramatic attempt to recover from disruption the essential kinship of man and beast and to affirm the unity of the created world. ***David Malouf was born in Brisbane. He has lived in England and now divides his time between Australia and Italy. Besides three earlier collections of poetry, he has published two novels. Of his recent novel, "An Imaginary Life," Alan Brien wrote in the Sunday Times: "This meticulously well-told tale --- is quiet, intense, low key but hypnotic in its gripping accumulation of detail, its gradual unwrapping of human reality amid what at first seems a barbarian and unknowable environment."'
