Reprint (likely circa 1890-1900 with "Two Hundredth Thousand" stated upon title page). 182, [10] pages. Hardcover: H 18.5cm x L 12.25cm. Brown leatherette spine chipped at ends with lengthwise tear along front joint causing gap between surface leather and underlying crash backstrip all contributing to some slight pliability to front board at joint/hinge; reddish-brown boards with some mottling and slight wear at lightly bumped corners. Strong toning to edges and endpapers; some occasional foxing and soiling as well as some pencil marks to lightly toned interior pages. Text block binding is firm. Condition redeemed by presence of two exceptionally uncommon Carthage, Mississippi bookseller marks for late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; front pastedown has purple ink stamp for "Cadenhead & Co. | Drugs, Book & Paints, | Carthage, Miss." followed by bluish-green ink stamp "F.E. Williams & Son | Drugs & Books | Carthage | Miss" on opposing front free endpaper recto. Cadenhead & Co. apparently operated in Carthage as early as the 1870s but a report in "The Druggists' Circular and Chemical Gazette" for August 1896 (per Google Books) states that the store was destroyed by fire caused by a lightning storm. The Mississippi Secretary of State's historical business records do not cite a F.E. Williams & Son nor is the company listed in various druggist or book-stationery trade directories for 1889, 1905, 1909, 1911, 1915, nor 1919 but nonetheless the Williams' stamp certainly seems contemporary to that date range. The book's copyright pages has dates for 1851 and 1879 but American Book Company was not formed until 1890 by the consolidation of several publishers.
