Condition: Very Good. [Marseille], Imprimerie Marseillaise [for Messageries Maritimes], 1895. A thin card (235 × 152 mm), printed recto only, with a colour-pictorial border. Card a little tanned; light crease to the top left-hand corner; in excellent condition. One of a series of pre-printed pictorial menu cards produced for the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes. This example has 'No. 3' below the bottom border, and a design featuring a maritime scene and the company crest. The printed and manuscript text (in a calligraphic hand) are both in French. The words 'En mer' have been overwritten with what appears to be the word 'Canal'. Shipping reports in Australian newspapers indicate that the 'Polynésien' cleared Suez on 8 May 1895, en route from Marseille to Australia, confirming that this meal was served while passing through the Suez canal.…

Card a little tanned, with a crease (beginning to crack) in the margin of the top left-hand corner; tiny sealed tear (and an associated crease) to the left-hand margin; notwithstanding, in excellent condition. One of a series of pre-printed pictorial menu cards produced for the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes. This example has 'Mod. No. 17' below the bottom border and a design featuring a north African port scene; the company crest is displayed on the saddle-bag of a camel. The printed and manuscript text (in a calligraphic hand) are both in French. On 3 July 1895 the 'Polynésien' was anchored off Semaphore en route from Nouméa to Marseille.…
