Hardcover. Condition: Good. Very Good dj. First Edition. [ex-rental library book (marked as such only by a large stamp on the ffep), well-worn, soiling to edges of text block; jacket is slightly trimmed (i.e. just a bit shorter than the book itself), backed with brown paper, tape-stained along edge of front flap and down the middle of the rear flap (with a little loss of text on the latter), but still and all pretty clean and attractive]. Murder mystery set at a run-down chateau in the wilds of Quebec, the author's fifth novel in as many years. The rear-jacket biography of Mrs. Millar is a nice reminder that she was already well established as a writer at a time when her husband Kenneth Millar (the future "Ross Macdonald") was still a grad student at the University of Michigan -- and while she was also tending to her "housewifely duties" and looking after their young daughter. (Not mentioned in the blurb, however, is the news that Ken had already written his first book, "The Dark Tunnel," which would also be published in 1944.).

Condition: VERY GOOD. Original book club edition. An omnibus edition containing three complete mystery novels - "He Wouldn't Kill Patience" by Carter Dickson (pseudonym of John Dickson Carr, 1906-1977), a Sir Henry Merrivale locked room mystery featuring an ingenious apparent suicide in a sealed room on the zoo grounds, two young professional magicians with a grudge against each other that dates back four generations and a tree-snake from Borneo named Patience; "You Only Hang Once" by H. W. Roden featuring publicist John Alden Knight and his PI friend Sid Ames; and finally "Fire Will Freeze" by Margaret Millar which begins with an ordinary bus ride to a Quebec resort, during a bad snowstorm, but when the bus driver, gets out to "fix something" and then vanishes, the riders manage to walk to the nearest house - one occupied by a mentally disturbed woman and her guardian. One of the pleasures of these omnibus volumes, which combine three very different works in one book, is the opportunity they create of discovering authors or novels which might be unknown to you. The pages appear to be acid free, and are still white and supple, unlike many books from this era. Each novel paginated individually - 217, 218, 182 pp. Back cover of dust jacket has an ad for the Detective Book Club. Very good+ in beige cloth in a very good dust jacket (bookplate on front pastedown, some discoloration from the binding process on endpapers, with a faint "old book" musty odor, in a dustjacket with a few chips, some toning to the spine). A very hard to find vintage book club edition, especially in dust jacket.
