Nella campagna di Polonia ebbe la sua prima vittoria. Partecipò alla Campagna di Francia e alla Battaglia d'Inghilterra. A fine 1940 aveva 20 vittorie al suo attivo. Nell'aprile del 1941 nei Balcani si distingue ancora valorosamente e, il suo record cresce durante l'invasione di Russia e, a fine agosto 1941, divenne Gruppenskommandeur di I./JG 54. Dal 1 marzo 1942 fu il 4° pilota a superare i 100 aerei abbattuti. Nel 1943, inquadrato nella difesa aerea del Reich, divenne Kommodore del JG 1. L'otto ottobre 1943, veniva abbattuto da P-47 americani, la sua manovra di espulsione dal velivolo funzionò, ma sfortunatamente il suo paracadute non s'aprì.
