First UK edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Clive Hirschhorn, Leonard Bernstein". Bernstein's "half century of written observations" was first published in the US earlier the same year. This copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express film and theatre critic and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). His ownership inscription, dated May 1983, is on the front pastedown. Quarto. Photographic frontispiece, photographs and musical score in the text throughout. Original quarter black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black paper-covered sides, facsimile of the author's signature to front board in gilt, speckled endpapers. With dust jacket. Top edge sunned, bump to bottom edge and corners, light foxing to edges and endpapers; jacket unclipped, crease to head of spine, browning to rear panel and flaps, nicks to top edge: a very good copy in like jacket.
