Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Printing. Price clipped dust jacket has light shelf wear, otherwise without flaw. In 1828, when she was just nineteen, Fanny Kemble made her stage debut at London's Covent Garden Theatre and became England's most acclaimed actress. She married a rich, handsome Philadelphian, whose wealth - she later learned - was derived from southern plantations worked by slaves. Appalled by what she saw during a plantation visit in 1840, Fanny recorded her outrage in a journal. On her return to London in 1862, she was shocked by the climate of public opinion there. It seemed likely that England would enter the Civil War on behalf of the South. She agreed to publish her Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, which is credited with swinging British sympathies from the confederate to the Union side. In this richly detailed biography Robert Rushmore tells the fascinating story of a woman of extraordinary passion, courage and moral conviction. **Bundle Up & Save On Postage**.
