Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-352, five inserted plates with illustrations by Edward Mason, original two-part blue-gray and brown cloth, front, spine and rear panels stamped in gold, decorated endpapers with floral pattern printed in olive-green. First edition. Publisher's presentation copy "with the sincere regards of the publisher" written in ink on the title page. "A doctor-scientist and his faithful bushman companion discover a new race in an Australian desert -- a cross between a lost tribe of bushmen and some pugnacious kangaroos! These four-foot balls are ruled by a white woman who had been stranded among them as a child. Like Twain's Hank Morgan, the doctor revolutionizes the native culture with mechanical wonders. The final result is a technologically sophisticated land where governments, judges, lawyers, and police are unnecessary because of the new morality inspired by the doctor's explosives and ideals." - Roemer, The Obsolete Necessity, p. 193. Bleiler (1978), p. 85. Reginald 06243. Wright (III) 2243. Not in Lewis, Negley or Sargent. Tiny spot on rear cover, minute rubbing to corner tips, a bright, tight, nearly fine copy A superior copy of a scarce book seldom found in nice condition. (#135388).
