Factor of safetyis a term describing the structural capacity of a system beyond theapplied loads or actual loads. Essentially, how much stronger the systemis than it needs to be for a given load. Safety factors are oftencalculated using detailed analysis because comprehensive testing isimpractical on many projects, such as bridges and buildings, but thestructure's ability to carry load must be determined to a reasonableaccuracy.
