Piet de Jong, born in Leeds in 1887, was a Yorkshireman of Dutch extraction who became architect and draughtsman to Sir Arthur Evans, excavator of the Palace of Minos at Knossos. While working for Evans in Crete, as well as for other scholars at the legendary sites of Athens, Corinth, Mycenae and Sparta, de Jong made over forty caricatures depicting friends and colleagues who worked in the archaeological world of Greece during the 1920s and 30s. Each cartoon sets a head against a background appropriate to its subject. These are published in full colour with a photograph of the sitter for comparison on the facing page. A brief biography of each person is provided and a more detailed life history of Piet and his wife, Effie. The allusions and anecdotes shown in the backgrounds of the pictures are elucidated, Where possible. The people portrayed, mostly English and American, range from the famous Arthur Evans, Carl Blegen (excavator of Troy and Pylos), E.J. Forsdyke (Director of the British Museum), Dilys Powell (film critic), Austen Harrison (Designer of Nuffield College, Oxford and the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem) to many other lesser luminaries. The cartoons deserve publication both for their artistic merit and for the social comment they make on archaeology and its protagonists during the inter-war years. De Jong was a humorist and their lives have been looked at with his point of view in mind.
