The 1975 exhibition Facefarces, Bodyposes 1968-1975 at Galerie Stadler in Paris documents one of the most radical and internationally influential periods in Arnulf Rainers career. In the late 1960s, the Austrian artist began moving away from purely abstract painting to place the theater of his own body at the center of his art. For his groundbreaking Face Farces, Rainer pulled grimacing faces inside photo booths (including at Viennas Westbahnhof station), enlarged the portraits, and drew or painted over them with immense gestural force to reveal emotional ecstasy and the fringes of human experience. Shortly after, he expanded this physical self-exploration to the entire body with his Body Poses. The presentation of these extreme photographic overpaintings - closely aligned with Viennese Actionism - at Rodolphe Stadler in Paris, an absolute premier destination for the European postwar avant-garde, marked a major milestone for Rainers international breakthrough in France.
