Royal 8vo, first edition,pp,xxiii,331, with 218 illustrations, brown cloth titled in gilt to the spine and upper cover, gilt animal blocking to the upper cover, bevelled edges to the covers, uncut, 30pp publisher's list to the rear, some mild foxing to the prelims, a bit shaken.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. xxiii + [i] + 331 + [1] pp. + [30 + [2] pp. publisher's list. . Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board. Bevelled edges Some pages uncut. Boards are water stained and occasional traces of foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by photographic portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature, protected by tissue guard and by 218 text figures, including maps. The subjects of chapters include recent extinctions, early man, elephants, horses, giant sloth and kangaroos. Two final chapters are concerned with dinosaurs and marine reptiles, and fishes, trilobites, etc. Edwin Ray Lankester (1837-1939), palaeontologist and evolutionary biologist, was a professor at University College, London, 1874-90 and at Oxford, 1891-98.
