Bevelled edges Some pages uncut. Boards are water stained and occasional traces of foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by photographic portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature, protected by tissue guard and by 218 text figures, including maps. The subjects of chapters include recent extinctions, early man, elephants, horses, giant sloth and kangaroos. Two final chapters are concerned with dinosaurs and marine reptiles, and fishes, trilobites, etc. Edwin Ray Lankester (1837-1939), palaeontologist and evolutionary biologist, was a professor at University College, London, 1874-90 and at Oxford, 1891-98.
