Why do dogs wag their tails? Or cats purr? Why do we get embarrassed, and why does embarrassment make us blush? These, and many other questions about the emotional life of man and animals are answered in this remarkable book. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was an immediate best~seller when it was first published in 1872 and still provides the point of departure for research, into emotion and facial expression. In his study of infants and children (including a delightfully objective study of his own baby's smiles and pouts), of the insane, of painting and sculpture, of cats and dogs and monkeys, and of the ways that people in different cultures express their feelings, Darwin's insights have not been improved upon by modern science. This definitive edition contains a substantial new Introduction and Afterword by Paul Ekman. Ekman also provides commentaries that use the latest scientific knowledge to elaborate, support and occasionally challenge Darwin's insights. When it was originally published, The Expression was the first scientific book in English to contain photographic repreductions: for this edition, Ekman has returned to Darwin's original notes in order to produce, for the first time, a corrected, authoritative text illustrated by drawings and photographs positioned exactly as its author intended. He also includes new illustrations that Darwin discussed, but which have never appeared in previous editions. The book reminds us that, in addition to being the nineteenth century's most influential thinker, Darwin was also a writer of consummate skill. Beautifully and profusely illustrated, this new edition promises to delight and enthral a new generation of readers. CHARLES DARWIN was born in Shrewsbury in 1809, the son of a doctor, and grandson of both Erasmus Darwin and of the industrialist Josiah Wedgwood. He entered Edinburgh University in 1825, where he studied medicine before transferring, in 1827, to Christ's College, Cambridge. In 1831, Darwin embarked on the Beagle, bound for South America. He returned in 1836, and in 1839 published his Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History of the various countries visited by H. M. S. Beagle. His great work, On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, was published on 24 November 1859. It was an immediate success: the first edition of 1,250 copies sold out the same day. In The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871 ), Darwin laid out his theory of sexual selection, arguing that human beings had evolved from higher primates. A year later, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was published. There then followed The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom (1876) and The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms (1881 ). He died in 1882 from a heart attack and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

12th thousand, 1901, edited by Francis Darwin. 8vo, 195 x 125 mm, 7¾ x 5 inches, 7 Heliotype photographic plates with tissue guards, each with several images, plus 21 other illustrations in the text, viii pages of prelims, 394 pages including index, original publisher's dark green cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, blind lines to covers, original brown endpapers, edges untrimmed. Slight wear to tips of corners, tiny fox spot to title page, otherwise a tight bright clean copy. Three of the photographic plates in the first and second issues of 1872 were folding, there are no folding plates in this edition, there are the same number of photographs, they have just been rearranged. This edition is a reset reissue of the second edition of 1890 edited by Darwin's son Francis Darwin. Francis added notes accumulated by Darwin on the subject which he had been unable to use because the first edition was not exhausted in his lifetime. Francis also adds his own footnotes in brackets. See Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin, page 143-144 and No. 1156. This work is 'an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment'. The photographs are by Victorian photographer Oscar Gustave Rejlander (see Helmut Gernsheim, The History of Photography, page 247). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. Edited by Francis Darwin. Illustrated with seven Heliotype Plates with original tissue guards, and 21 illustrations in the text. Second edition. Publisher's green cloth with decorative borders in blind to front and rear boards, titles and decorations in gilt to spine, and brown coated endpapers. Very good, with light rubbing to spine ends, corners slightly bumped, a slight lean to spine, minimal separation to gutters on pp. 272 - 273 and pp. viii - [1], and possible discrete repair to hinges. Overall, a solid copy of Darwin's "forgotten masterpiece," with very well-preserved plates. Freeman 1146. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals expands on Darwin's theories raised in On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871), arguing that there is an evolutionary explanation for the human expression of emotions. The book was originally intended by Darwin to be a chapter in The Descent of Man, but grew until it was necessary to publish the work separately. An influential text in the field of psychology, the book has also been described as "a pivotal turning point in the history of book illustration, right up there with Alice in Wonderland" (The Atlantic). With seven plates of heliotypes that represent various human emotions, The Expression of the Emotions was one of the first scientific books to include photographs. These photographs were provided by a handful of photographers and researchers, including Guillaume-Benjamin Duchenne, Adolph Kindermann, George Charles Wallich, James Crichton-Browne, and Oscar Rejlander. Rejlander contributed nineteen of the thirty photographs in the book, including the crying baby photo, later dubbed "Ginx's baby," which became incredibly popular in its time. Interestingly, Darwin's research for the book prompted him to circulate one of the first scientific questionnaires, which he used to gauge people's ability to identify a handful of core emotions. For this second edition, Charles Darwin's son, Francis Darwin, incorporated notes that Charles made before his death in anticipation of a new edition of the book and added his own footnotes. According to Freeman, this second edition "represents the final text, and the printings of 1901 and 1905, though reset, are not altered.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, second state with "that" spelled incorrectly on the first line of p. 208 (as "htat"). Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory and a foundational work in evolutionary psychology, Expression of the Emotions explores the biological origins of human and animal expression, arguing for their continuity across species. It forms a crucial part of his broader theory of evolution. It was "written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment." Illustrated with heliotype plates among the earliest published photographs in a scientific work featuring subjects such as Darwin s own children, asylum patients, and animals. (Freeman 1142) London: John Murray, 1872. Publisher's original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. vi, 374 + 4 ads dated November 1872, with 7 heliotype plates (3 folding), woodcut illustrations within text, many full-page. About very good. Light wear and rubbing to boards, rear hinge just barely starting but still secure, text block a touch shaken and overopened at points. Owner's signature to verso of front endpaper, a couple light stains to title page, scattered minor foxing and toning, else internally clean.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. First Edition. First US edition, octavo size, 396 pp. Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was interested in the origins of life from a young age, and when the "Beagle" had an opening for a naturalist, his interest and reputation for "collecting, observing, & noting any thing worthy to be noted in Natural History" earned him the post on this voyage which would last for five years, and which would become duly famous. It would become 'the key formative event in Darwin's life" and the many species he observed, both living and extinct, would foster "an intellectual ferment and fortif[y] him to re-evaluate all of natural history" (n.b., quote from the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). This work, "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals", is "Charles Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory, following 'On the Origin of Species' (1859) and 'The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex' (1871). Initially intended as a chapter in Descent of Man, Expression grew in length and was published separately in 1872. Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human characteristics like smiling and frowning, shrugging shoulders, lifting eyebrows in surprise, and baring teeth in an angry sneer" (n.b., quote from Wiki). He "examined the causes, physiological and psychological, of all the fundamental emotions in man and animals. He concluded that 'the chief expressive actions exhibited by man and by the lower animals are now innate or inherited', and that most of the movements of expression must have been gradually acquired. This is the only book by Darwin illustrated with photographs" (n.b., quote from the online History of Medicine and the Life Sciences). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust-coloured cloth over boards, both boards with ruled borders and decorations in black, the spine with gilt ruled borders and lettering, light yellow coated endpapers, with twenty-one in-text illustrations and seven Heliotype plates, the plate facing p. 264 being a four-panel foldout, fourteen pages of publisher's ads at the rear; octavo size (8" by 5 1/4"), pagination: [i-iii] iv-viii [1] 2-374 [14-page publisher's catalogue at rear]. ___CONDITION: Volume now near fine, we had a professional (name available upon request) restore the joints, head and tail of the spine; the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean, and the sole prior owner marking we see a short gift inscription, in pencil on the front free endpaper ("from [name] to Prof Lakoff"); some overall light toning to the paper, the four-panel fold-out illustration with a shallow crease at the top right margin and the fold between the third and fourth panels apparently having been neatly mended with glue at some point. ___CITATION: Freeman, no. 1143; Garrison & Morton, no. 4975. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1873 Charles DARWIN 1ed Expression of Emotions in Man & Animal EVOLUTION Science The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals by Charles Darwin is a groundbreaking work in the fields of ethology, psychology, and communication theory, exploring the physical manifestations of emotions in humans and other mammals. Darwin meticulously examined facial muscles, vocal expressions, and other forms of non-verbal communication, correlating them with a wide array of emotions ranging from love, joy, and devotion to anger, fear, and surprise. He posited that these expressive actions are innate or inherited, challenging the notion that human facial expressions are uniquely endowed. This work represents a significant contribution to understanding animal behavior and the conveyance of emotional states, laying the foundation for future studies in these disciplines. Through his comprehensive analysis, Darwin establishes the universality of emotional expression across species, cementing this as a foundational text in the evolutionary sciences. Notably, the book is enriched with numerous photographs, featuring images from photographer Oscar Rejlander, making it Darwin s first work to utilize heliotype plates and one of the earliest integrations of photography in scientific publications.
