This latter browned and starting to fray at the hinges, a little delicate though OK if handled carefully. The internal hinges and binding are sound and tight, some tanning to pages and offsetting to end-papers. The laid-effect paper is attractive also with rough-cut edges for that exclusive feel. Some of the title page in red ink, a slim volume for the risqué collector. 80pp. Size: 8vo.

8vo. pp. 80. Frontispiece and three plates, signed 'A.Z.', illustrating flagellation scenes. A good reprint of a work that originally appeared, as the title states, at London in 1885. The book is comprised for the most part of extracts from flagellation novels, letters extracted from the press of the day advocating corporal punishment and anecdotes and personal experiences of floggings. The plates are contemporary to the reprint, not the original edition of 1885. White cloth boards, printed in red on the spine. Minor staining to binding, else a good copy.

Condition: Good. Plain grey cloth boards with ivory spine with (unsurprisingly) no title to spine. Edges are scuffed and there is light staining. Pages are age-tanned but clean. A collection of newspaper cuttings dated around 1937 on whipping also included.

Other anecdotes include: 'Revelations of Boarding School Practices'; 'Flogging Girls'; 'Flogging with a Frying Pan'; 'Punishment of the Knout in Russia'; 'A Conjugal Scene'; the notorious case of 'Elizabeth Brownrigg', who was executed for her excesses; and 'Flogging at Sea'. "Similar in format and typography to the 'Phallic' series published about that time by George Redwaypossibly by the same printer.
