From the time of initial contact with Europeans and simultaneously the introduction of new technology (firearms), it was over thirty years before American Indians actually commenced the successful adoption of the new firearm ignition systems. It is argued that the reasons for t his delay are readily discoverable -- namely through the application of certain so-called cultural laws as formulated by Sahlins and Service ("law of cultural dominance," "law of evolutionary potential," etc.) are seen as appropriate to the task for explaining the dynamics of cultural diffusion and adaption. In this paper both ethnohistorical and archaeological evidences are adduced to test and eventually to support the several general explanatory claims of Sahlins and Service.
