It also discusses the origin of paper, cotton, linen, calligraphy, miniature painting in old manuscripts, watermarks, printer's signatures and marks used in early typography. The author examines the inscriptions found on marble or stone, which are the only means of judging the writing of the ancient Greeks who mostly wrote in capital or majuscule letters. He finds that the first manuscripts were written with the same characters and this style of writing only reached its full development during the reign of Greek emperors. It was during this time that monks, especially those in Greece and Asia Minor, became the main producers of manuscripts. The author observes that Greek cursive writing was later reduced to calligraphy and provides models of large and small cursive characters from the tenth and eleventh centuries. The book gathers together a large number of names of Greek calligraphers, the earliest of whom dates back to the tenth century. The author traces the evolution of Latin calligraphy from its beginnings to the ninth century and finds that the beautiful form of capital letters seen from this period can be observed in inscriptions on old buildings and even on some Roman coins dating back two centuries before Julius Caesar. This calligraphic style was not present in early manuscripts, although capital letters were still used in them. The book also examines the history of printing and provides examples of beautiful Greek cursive writing from the twelve volumes of the New Testament in Greek published between 1780 and 1788. Engraved decorations first became popular during the tenth century, and the author finds that from this century onwards the forms of the letters changed as various peoples took control of Italy and neighboring countries. He traces the development of Lombardic writing, Visigothic writing, Anglo-Saxon writing, Franco-Gallic writing, Carolingian writing used in Germany during the reign of Charlemagne, and minuscule Roman writing from the eighth century. The author also examines various writing styles that developed subsequently and concludes by discussing the history of punctuation and explores the differences in practice between various countries. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
