Illustrated, frontispiece portraits in each volume plus fifty-six black and white photographs. Blue cloth, gilt; TR's Secretary of War and later Secretary of State and Senator. A very impressive man. This copy is signed by the author, and inscribed to one of his students, John S. Mayfield (1904-1983). Mayfield was a government employee, and during the 1950s went into the private sector as vice-president of American Rail and steel company in Washington, DC. He was in charge of relations with the government on projects with federal agencies and the company's operations in Asia and Latin America. He was also a bibliophile, and an expert on and collector of books and manuscripts by American and English poets and writers such as Byron, Swinburne, Tarkington, and Twain. He was curator of rare books and manuscripts at Syrcuse University, and later on the executive committee of the Georgetown University Library. Signed.

A 1912 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Elihu Root (1845-1937) served as Secretary of War under both President William Mckinley's and Theodore Roosevelt's administrations, eventually serving as Secretary of State under Roosevelt. Root oversaw the colonial possessions won from the Spanish-American War, pioneered modern US international relations and arbitration, and served as U.S. Attorney in several high-profile prosecutions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
