1779, New Edition, revised and corrected. (Leather binding) Very good. 435pp. Bound in full light brown calf with the spine having raised bands and a leather label. Separate title page in French and printed in three columns with parallel English, phonetic and French text. The covers are worn around the edges and corners, and the tips of the top and bottom of the spine are worn away. There is what appears to be a contemporary bookseller's label pasted to the inner front board, also a previous owner's name on the front endpaper. Parallel text in French and English. (Reference, Grammar--English, Linguistics).

8vo, pp. x, [ii, ads], [9]-486. Two title-pages, one in French and one in English, the French with a pasted-on slip amending the imprint to read: ?A Paris, chez Belin fils, Libraire, quai des Augustins No. 55, 1807? Contemporary French speckled sheep, spine divided by raised bands, black morocco label, other compartments gilt, edges sprinkled red. A little dampmarking to corners. Binding also dampmarked at head of boards, top spine compartment almost entirely defective. A rare edition of this best-selling textbook of the English language for Francophone learners, with an apparently-unrecorded slip altering the imprint. ESTC records editions under this title as early as 1761, with another dozen through 1800, but no entry for this year, or this publisher. Alston adds a handful of additional printings, including this one, locating a scattering of copies across Europe and one in the USA (Columbia). Despite sufficient sales to drive so many reprints, this copy seems to have perhaps been remaindered - the imprint of the French title-page has a pasted-on label updating it to a Paris publisher with a date 11 years later. We have not found record of another example of this label. Alston II 273.
