The publication was largely the early work of William F. Friedman, who let the Signals Intelligence Service, predecessor of the National Security Agency. Friedman was inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame and received medals under presidents Truman and Eisenhower. Friedman coined several terms, including "cryptanalysis", and wrote many monographs on cryptography. One of these (written mostly in his spare time) was the first draft of his Elements of cryptanalysis, which later was expanded to four volumes and became the U. S.
