Cover is very fine but the leather label seems older than the cloth (probably the original) so it shows some wear. Interior is excellent ; very clean, tight and solid, showing some very minor foxing at end, a very light tanning to pages, but no mark, inscription, annotation or underling. All plates are present and in fine condition. A nice copy of this rare book. First Edition of the English Translation of the first three books of Simson's Sectionum Conicarum Libri V (1735), an introduction to the treatise of Apollonius of Perga on the subject of conic sections. Simson was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow from 1711 until 1761, during which time he counted among his pupils Colin Maclaurin, Matthew Stewart and William Traill, all of whom later occupied chairs of mathematics in Scottish universities. It was to mathematical scholarship that Simson made his most significant contribution, particularly with respect to the early Greek geometers (Euclid, Pappus of Alexandria, and Apollonius of Perga).
