He stressed the value of comparative anatomy as the basis of the study of descent, considering that knowledge of the relations of corresponding parts in different animals was more important than comparative embryology in this respect.' Gegenbaur (1826-1903) graduated from his home university in Würzburg in medicine, in 1851. He became professor of anatomy, first at Jena in 1856, and then at Heidelberg in 1873. He was an early and foremost proponent of evolutionary theory in Germany and a close friend and supporter of Ernst Haeckel. His most innovative work was on the evolutionary development of the vertebrate skull, based on his study of cartilaginous fishes and given in some detail in the above work.
