Hardcover. Condition: Good -. No Jacket. J. M. Nordquist (illustrator). 1st Edition. Elementary Seismology by Charles F. Richter (1958 1st Edition Hardcover without Dust Jacket) This book developed from lecture courses given by author for students in geology not planning to specialize in seismology or geophysics. Extensive bibliography with mathematic tools developed in appendixes. Extensive illustrations: B&W photos, maps and line drawings. viii + 768pp. Charles Francis Richter (1900-1985) was an American seismologist and physicist. Richter is most famous as the creator of the Richter magnitude scale, which, until the development of the moment magnitude scale in 1979, quantified the size of earthquakes. Richter first used the scale in 1935 after developing it in collaboration with Beno Gutenberg; both worked at the California Institute of Technology. Gutenberg's contribution was substantial, but his aversion to interviews contributed to his name being left off the scale. Richter became a full professor at the California Institute of Technology in 1952. In 1958, he published Elementary Seismology based on his undergraduate teaching notes. As Richter seldom published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, this book has come to be considered his most important contribution to seismology. Hardcover has unique gray cloth spine plus 2/3 board with remainder brown 1/3 board to edges opposite spine. Black shadowboxes on spine and front, white lettering, but no DJ. Interior is tight, clean and mostly unmarked except for occasional ink underlining. Still, this book appears to have been reworked from a a public library copy to appear privately owned. Scar at foot of spine from removal of filing label, end-pages glued together, hand-written red hash marks on top page-edge to hide ink stamps. Copyright 1958. Printed in U.S.A. This copy printed in 1958 according to date on front of title page. 1st printing assumed. No ISBN nor MSR. LCCN: 58-5970. Thanks for Looking! Ex-Library (Public).
