First Edition
Oblong folio. 15 x 12.25 in. [32 pp (unpaginated).], colour-illustrated throughout, colour-illustrated self-printed softcovers (minor shelfwear, dustsoiling, light center fold crease as issued), still VG copy, w/ dealership stamp of Albert E. Smith Edsel, Taunton, MA. First edition of this lavishly produced premium dealer's catalogue which was developed by Ford from car shopper polling data (they ignored most of the data), and after a yearlong teaser campaign the 18 models debuted at the end of 1957 for the 1958 model year. The designers had intended to make a statement with the vertical horse collar grille, reminiscent of Bugatti, and Packard Predictor, but car buyers in the midst of the 1957-58 recession were uninterested, and eventually the car line ceased production in 1960. They were roomy, featured push-button shifting, speed warning lights, safety door latches, contour seats, and more. Although the car was largely shunned for decades, in unrestored, or restored condition they now command significant prices. Worldcat locates copies in The Strong (NY) & the Library of Michigan.
