No Binding. Condition: Very Good. JAMES SULLIVAN (1744-1808) was the 7th governor of Massachusetts (1870-1808) and before that as 2nd Attorney general from 1790 to 1807. As attorney general, Sullivan successfully prosecuted Jason Fairbanks for murdering his girlfriend in an extremely bizarre case in Dedham, MA. Offering a bold cut signature of Sullivan 1 x 2 5/8 mounted to a large engraved portrait of Sullivan, measuring 5 ½ x 8 ½, both in excellent condition. The signature is dated 1 July 1777. The engraving is of a painting by the renowned American painter Gilbert Stuart. The engraving was made by Hezekiah Wright Smith, who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1828, moved to America with his family and worked in Boston. Fairbanks' case was sensational at the time. After his conviction, he was held at the Dedham jail, where family and friends helped him to escape. The plan was for him to go to Canada but he was captured along the way, sent to the Suffolk County Jail and later hanged. Extensive research included. The engraving and signature are in very good condition. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer. We also offer a 30-day return policy.
