Meyer (1826 â" 1909) and his father, Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), were German publishers of the illustrated series Meyerâs Universum. In 1849 Joseph Meyer sent his son Herrmann to establish a publishing house in New York, which published an American edition of the Universum in 1852-53. This engraving was from The United States Illustrated; in Views of City and Country, which proved to be less successful, so Herrmann Meyer returned to Germany to the family firm.
