Volume two; xii: 425pp with an illustration to frontispiece protected by a tissue-guard and a map following last page. "The Dynasts" is an epic drama of the war with Napoleon, in three parts, nineteen acts, and one hundred and thirty scenes. These two volumes make up volumes II and III of the Wessex edition of Thomas Hardy's Verse, and are accompanied by prefaces and notes. Red boards have gilt titles and decorations to spine, and are darkened in some areas. Pages are rough-cut. Very slight signs of foxing to front and rear free endpapers, and a shadow is evident on the half-title pages. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Book Condition - Fine: The book remains in original condition as when published (1924). No dust jacket. Carefully stored, the book's original leather binding is free of marks, tears or rips; gilt decoration across front cover and spine is clean. Internally, the book's pages are clean and…tightly bound with crisp edges, and have never been thumbed or opened. As new, unread. Frist Pocket Edition, 1924. Two volumes complete. Internal bookmark (dark brown ribbon) also remains intact. This would make a wonderful little addition to any Hardy collection. The Dynasts - Part III: The third part of Hardy's epic verse‑drama charts the final years (1805‑1815) of the Napoleonic Wars, portraying monumental military engagements alongside ordinary suffering and the indifferent workings of a cosmic "Immanent Will". Hardy interleaves terrestrial scenes of battles, retreats and empires with "Overworld" spirits that observe and comment on human affairs, thus underscoring his belief that individual heroism and human agency are ultimately dwarfed by larger historical forces. The Famous Tragedy of the Queen of Cornwall (also titled The Queen of Cornwall): In this one‑act verse tragedy set at Tintagel Castle and drawing on the legend of Tristram and Iseult, Hardy portrays the doomed love of Queen Iseult and Tristram, the jealous rage of King Mark and the final cascading deaths of the lovers. Executed in a pared‑down, archaic poetic style and meant for performance by mummers, the play functions as a somber meditation on fate, loyalty and the destructive power of passion.
