The interactionist view presented by Thomas and Chess emphasizes "the dialectical unity of simultaneously operative and mutually opposite dynamic forces-heredity and environment; biology and culture; continuity and change; emotion and thought." Arguments separating the effects of nature and nurture, attributing so much to heredity and so much to environment, are meaningless. Growth is seen as taking place through the ongoing, complex, dynamic interaction of innate capabilities and environment.
