Bottom fore-corner of text block lightly bumped. Dust jacket worn at head of spine; chipped at corners; some tears along top edge; not price clipped; in an archival mylar sleeve. 307 pages. A highly detailed, day-by-day, study of the evacuation of Allied soldiers at Dunkirk, May 26-June 4, 1940. The author combines eye witness reporting and authoritative source material to describe the men, ships, planning and strategy of the evacuation, and provides quite a bit of necessary minutiae. The appendix includes a complete list of all the ships that took part in Operation Dynamo. The author, A. D. ''David'' Divine (1904-1987), was himself a participant at Dunkirk with the small boats, where he crossed the channel three times and was wounded on the final voyage. He went on to write several books on military issues, as well as novels, and after the war was the defence correspondent of the British Sunday Times.
