First edition. 4pp. Recent black morocco-backed marbled boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Lightly rubbed. A rare survival of the sole edition of Daniel Defoe's (1660-1731) succinct critique of of Article five of the Act of Union which brought Scottish-owed vessels, even those built abroad, under the purview of the English Navig…ation Acts, allowing them free trade with England and her colonies. The debate surrounding the fifth article concerned when Scottish vessels should be given the freedom of the English ports. Defoe argues that the deadline should be the signing of the Treaty, rather than its ratification, in order to avoid merchants purchasing foreign ships now and have them made free. ESTC records copies at three locations in the British Isles (BL, Manchester, and NLS), and a further eight worldwide (Alexander Turnbull, Columbia, Folger, Huntington, Illinois, Indiana, McMaster, and Yale).
