Undated printing (possibly pre-Prohibition, though the boards are the same as a 1934 printing in our possession). Original cloth covered boards, 6 inches by 3 inches. "An Invaluable Companion to all who are Engaged in the Liquor Business. Including Toasts and Sentiments for all Occasions." Illustrated. Lowe, who may have bar tended at the Hoffman House states in the preface that his hair is "whitened by the shaved ice and powdered sugar of many a sweltering summer". Lowe is presumed to have created the variant of the Gibson Cocktail in which bitters are replaced by three dashes of Angostura, with half the cognac and an addition of barspoon of gum. Good, edge worn copy, staining to front cover, original owners signature at front pastedown, recipe for Hot Buttered Rum in pencil at front endpaper.

Drake and Company, Chicago, 1904. The book is small, measuring 2.5" x 5.75", 63 pages; perhaps pocket-sized for convenience. Alphabetical letter tabs on the fore-edge for ease of use. Illustrated throughout with comical drawings of popular bar phrases and toasts like "On the House", "Wetting your Whistle", and "Here's Looking at You".The book is in good plus condition. Wear and staining to the boards and spine, with a horizontal crease across the back cover, possible as a result of being in a bartender's pocket. Water stains to the rear paste-down. The hinges are cracked with the binding starting.The printing of this book predates the era of martinis, sidecars, and old fashioned's, and is filled with turn-of-the-century vintage cocktails. There are some classic cocktails in the mix including drinks like Tom Collins, whiskey sours, and highballs, as well as spiked punches and lemonades for parties and special occasions.
