Dann hätte man ihn nämlich gefragt, was er nachts in einem fremden Zimmer zu suchen hatte. . - Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (* 1. April 1875 in Greenwich, London; 10. Februar 1932 in Hollywood, Kalifornien), war ein englischer Schriftsteller, Drehbuchautor, Regisseur, Journalist und Dramatiker. Wallace gehört zu den erfolgreichsten englischsprachigen Kriminalschriftstellern. Leben und Werk: Wallace wurde unter dem Namen Richard Horatio Edgar als unehelicher Sohn eines Schauspielerpaares geboren und unmittelbar nach seiner Geburt von einem Londoner Fischhändler adoptiert. Er wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf und hatte keine abgeschlossene Schulausbildung. Dennoch arbeitete er sich im Burenkrieg bis zum Kriegsberichterstatter in Südafrika hoch. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach London arbeitete er als Journalist und Sonderberichterstatter. Die Romane von Edgar Wallace wurden in vierundvierzig Sprachen übersetzt. 1905 erschien im Eigenverlag sein erster Kriminalroman Die vier Gerechten, der zwar ein Publikumserfolg war, aber für Wallace ein finanzielles Desaster bedeutete. Er hatte jedem, der die Lösung des Buches erraten würde, einen Preis in Höhe von 500 Pfund versprochen, für damalige Zeiten eine ungeheure Summe. Zu viele Menschen errieten das Ende des Romans, und er war damit finanziell am Ende. Es war nur dem Eingreifen von Lord Harmworth von der Daily Mail zu verdanken, dass Edgar Wallace diese Pleite überstand. Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine journalistische Arbeit und seine Afrikaromane, deren erster 1911 unter dem Titel Sanders vom Strom erschien. Wallaces berühmtester Krimi war Der Hexer, der als Theaterstück am 1. Mai 1926 uraufgeführt wurde und ein riesiger Erfolg war. In Deutschland fand die Uraufführung 1927 am Deutschen Theater in Berlin unter der Regie von Max Reinhardt statt. Für die erste Verfilmung seines Romans The Squeaker (dt. Der Zinker, 1930) schrieb er nicht nur das Drehbuch, sondern führte auch selbst Regie. Wallace litt erheblich unter dem Erfolgsdruck. Er wurde stark übergewichtig und erkrankte an Diabetes, der nicht behandelt wurde. Auf einer Amerika-Reise starb er im Alter von 57 Jahren an den Folgen einer Lungenentzündung. Wallace verfasste auch zahlreiche Kurzgeschichten, Essays, Gedichte, Theaterstücke sowie Drehbücher. Unter anderem war er Drehbuchautor des Klassikers King Kong und die weiße Frau mit Fay Wray (er verstarb noch vor dessen Uraufführung). Als sein Sarg von den USA nach England überführt wurde, wurde im Hafen von Southampton Halbmast geflaggt, und in Londons legendärer Zeitungstraße - der Fleet Street - läuteten die Glocken. Wallace liegt in Little Marlow, England begraben. In der Nähe der Fleet Street erinnert am Ludgate Circus eine Gedenktafel an Edgar Wallace mit dem Text: Er lernte Reichtum und Armut kennen - er verkehrte mit Königen und doch blieb er sich selbst treu. Seine Talente widmete er der Literatur, doch sein Herz gehörte der Fleet Street. Sein Sohn Bryan Edgar Wallace und seine Tochter Penelope Wallace waren ebenfalls Kriminalschriftsteller. Wallace hatte einen sehr exzessiven Lebensstil, seine Spielsucht brachte ihm hohe Schulden ein. Doch konnten seine Erben die Schulden durch die Tantiemen seiner Werke innerhalb eines Jahres ausgleichen. Noch heute belaufen sich die Tantiemen auf ca. 1 Million Euro im Jahr. Nach dem 1959 gedrehten deutschen Spielfilm Der Frosch mit der Maske gab es in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren einen regelrechten Edgar-Wallace-Boom in Deutschland mit 38 Wallace-Verfilmungen. Viele dieser Filme wurden mit dem Spruch Hallo, hier spricht Edgar Wallace! eingeleitet. In den Filmen stellte Klaus Kinski oft den Verbrecher oder einen Verdächtigen dar. Zu weiteren Stammschauspielern der deutschen Serie gehörten auch Eddi Arent, Joachim Fuchsberger, Siegfried Schürenberg und Heinz Drache. Auch in Großbritannien entstanden in dieser Zeit viele Romanverfilmungen, die jedoch in Deutschland kaum bekannt sind. Das Archiv des deutschen Kriminalfilms stiftet seit 1999 den Edgar-Wallace-Preis für besondere Verdienste um den Kriminalfilm (nicht zu verwechseln mit dem englischen Edgar für den besten Krimi des Jahres; nicht nach Wallace, sondern nach Edgar Allan Poe benannt). .
