Signed by Jeffery Amherst (1717-1797) 1st Baron of Amherst, KB, and countersigned by his secretary Arthur Mair. Dated December 2, 1761 at New York, it conveys permission to John Hawkins acting paymaster of the Engineering Department a sum of more than 8,535 pounds Sterling for expenses in "carrying on the Works at several Forts." The document was torn in half, with no loss, and was repaired long ago with archival tape on the reverse. Minor soiling and creasing. Amherst is credited as the architect of Britain's successful campaign to conquer the territory of New France during the Seven Years' War. Amherst's legacy is controversial due to his expressed desire to spread smallpox among the disaffected tribes of Indians during Pontiac's War. Size: Quarto (4to). Signed by Author(s). Autograph.
