Some cover wear and page discoloration noted. front cover has been repaired with tape, small tear in rear cover and rear flyleaf, pages have darkened, marks on bottom edge). Michael David Herr[1] (April 13, 1940 - June 23, 2016) was an American writer and war correspondent, known as the author of Dispatches (1977), a memoir of his time as a correspondent for Esquire (1967-1969) during the Vietnam War. The book was called the best "to have been written about the Vietnam War" by The New York Times Book Review. Novelist John le Carré called it "the best book I have ever read on men and war in our time." Herr was credited in the film for writing the narration for Francis Ford Coppola's 1997 film The Rainmaker. He had previously contributed to the narration for Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film Full Metal Jacket (1987) with director Stanley Kubrick and author Gustav Hasford. That film was based on Hasford's novel The Short-Timers and the screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award. Herr collaborated with Richard Stanley in writing the original screenplay for the 1996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau based on the H.G. Wells novel of the same name. Herr wrote a pair of articles for Vanity Fair about Stanley Kubrick, which were later incorporated into the short book Kubrick (2000), a personal biography of the director. Dispatches is a New Journalism book by Michael Herr that describes the author's experiences in Vietnam as a war correspondent for Esquire magazine. First published in 1977, Dispatches was one of the first pieces of American literature that portrayed the experiences of soldiers in the Vietnam War for American readers. "Dispatches" arrived late. Herr served as Esquire's correspondent from 1967 to 1969, and returned to the United States intending to produce a book about what he'd seen there immediately, but 18 months after his return, he suffered a nervous breakdown due to the events that he witnessed and stopped writing for five years, until it was ultimately published in 1977. Featured in the book are fellow war correspondents Sean Flynn, Dana Stone, and Dale Dye, and photojournalist Tim Page. Dispatches was reprinted in 2009 by Everyman's Library as a contemporary classic. Derived from a Kirkus Review: "Vietnam, man. Bomb 'em and feed 'em, bomb 'em and feed 'em"â"a chopper pilot summarized the war strategy for Herr. And with Herr's volume of unfiled dispatches from the front, the awareness grows that this warâ"like no other since WWIâ"continues to produce a rich lode of literature, part litany, part exorcism, part nostalgia. Like his buddies Scan Flynn and Dana Stoneâ"later MIA in Cambodiaâ"Herr was a correspondent with a license to see more than just a single mud hole. Using the "Airmobility" of the helicopters, he hopscotched the country from Hue to Danang to the DMZ to Saigon. He was at Hue during the battle that reduced the old Imperial capital to rubble, at Khe Sanh when the grunts' expectations of another Alamo were running high. Herr, who is full of twisted, hidden ironies, is all wrapped up in the craziness of the war, enthralled by the limitless "variety of deaths and mutilations the war offered," and by the awful language of the official communiques which always reported spirits high, weather fine. He knew, and his buddies knew, that this kind of reportage was "psychotic vaudeville"â"though not for a moment would he deny the harsh glamour of being a working war correspondent. He came home eventually, to do the "Survivor Shuffle" and miss Vietnam acutely, and he writes with a fierce, tight insistence that never lets go.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A Fine tight unread copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Michael Herr went to Vietnam in 1967 virtually unknown as a writer but, armed with press credentials for Esquire Magazine, he quickly rose above the crowd of writers covering the war with his brilliant, unorthodox prose. Herr's six extended pieces in this collection capture the war and its participants like no other writer except for Tim O'Brian in his equally masterful "The Things They Carried." Herr was one of the original Gonzo New Journalists in the company of such literary trail-cutters as Hunter S Thompson, Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote and Gay Talese. Herr when not imbedded on numerous marine and army operations spent many off hours in the company of three other flamboyant correspondents: Tim Page, Dana Stone and Sean Flynn (Errol Flynn's son). Photographer Page would survive his experience in Vietnam but in 1970, while traveling by motorcycle in Cambodia, Flynn and Dana Stone (on assignment for Time magazine and CBS News respectively) were captured by communist guerrillas at a roadblock on Highway One. They were never heard from again and their remains have never been found. Herr found himself in as much danger as the soldiers he set out to document in a war that was more disillusioning than understandable. He was with the marines during the prolonged siege of Khe Sanh and most effectively captured the hallucinatory madness of the battle. "Dispatches" is as good as (war) writing gets; Herr puts the reader right where he is, so that his experience becomes yours which is about as close as most people would ever want to get to the real thing.

Contemporary owner's name on front fly, spine severely cocked, very light stain on bottom edges, thus good only in a very good dustwrapper with light edgewear. One of the best books of the Vietnam War, a series of reports sent by the author to *Esquire* magazine. First editions in acceptable condition have become quite uncommon. Sean Flynn, son of Errol Flynn, and Dana Stone are featured in this story and briefly mentions their capture by the Viet Cong. Several of the fictional characters mentioned were used as the basis for such films as "Apocalypse Now" and "Full Metal Jacket.".
