He was in England when war broke out, flying Spitfires for the RAF. He was one of the pilots who covered Dunkirk and fought in the Battle of Britain becoming a fighter Ace. With promotion he formed and was given command of 456 RAAF Squadron, Australia's only night-fighter unit, operating with Mosquitoes, Defiants and Beaufighters to defend England. In 1944 he was back in Australia, joined the Pacific war effort and in 1945 was involved with the defence of Morotai. He flew 219 sorties and was awarded a DFC-later being awarded a MBE and CBE.
