Hardcover. Condition: Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. For a long time the traditional categories of rhetoric and genre have gone unchallenged, despite their inadequacy as a means of classifying what writers, particularly young writers, actually do. The School Council project on the Written Language of 11 - 18 year olds set out, therefore, to formulate and test a new and more realistic set of categories. The project, based at the London Institute of Education, under the direction of Professor James Britton, approached the problem from two angles: the function served by a piece of writing, and the audience - self, teacher, wider public - to which it is addressed. The authors see the development of children's writing ability as a process of differentiation - that is, of ability to handle an increasing variety of writing tasks. Their study of well over 2000 scripts in all subjects, from 85 classes at 65 schools, suggests that children are not taking up anything like the full range of writing options open to them. The report makes a major contribution to the discussion of 'language across the curriculum'. A Schools Council Research Studies publication. An influential project and report. Hardback with dustjacket protected by a library sleeve. Binding firm. A library label and pocket on front endpaper. All pages clean and unmarked.
