This book provides an account of international efforts in the early 20th century to map the exact longitude between the continents of North America and Europe. Completed just before the outbreak of the First World War, the project involved the precise measurement of longitude difference between stations in Washington, Cambridge, and Far Rockaway in the United States, and a location in the Azores, with a final connection to a station outside of Berlin, Germany. Through the meticulous description of the instruments, methods, and challenges of this endeavor, the author gives readers an in-depth look at the evolution of precision measurement and international scientific cooperation and diplomacy in the early 20th century. This book will be of interest to historians of science and technology and to anyone who appreciates the human endeavor to transcend geographical barriers through scientific collaboration.
