Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Over the centuries, Jewish and Muslim writers transformed the biblical Queen of Sheba from a clever, politically astute sovereign to a demonic force threatening the boundaries of gender. In this book, Jacob Lassner shows how successive retellings of the biblical story reveal anxieties about gender and illuminate the processes of cultural transmission. The Bible presents the Queen of Sheba's encounter with King Solomon as a diplomatic mission: the queen comes 'to test him with hard questions,' all of which he answers to her satisfaction; she then praises him and, after an exchange of gifts, returns to her own land. By the Middle Ages, Lassner demonstrates, the focus of the queen's visit had shifted from international to sexual politics. The queen was now portrayed as acting in open defiance of nature's equilibrium and God's design. In these retellings, the authors humbled the queen and thereby restored the world to its proper condition. Lassner also examines the Islamization of Jewish themes, using the dramatic accounts of Solomon and his female antagonist as a test case of how Jewish lore penetrated the literary imagination of Muslims. 'Demonizing the Queen of Sheba' thus addresses not only specialists in Jewish and Islamic studies, but also those concerned with issues of cultural transmission and the role of gender in history.

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - serh guter Zustand / very good condition - Introduction -- The Queen of Sheba heard of Solomons fame . . . and she came to test him . (I Kings 10: l/II Chron. 9:1) -- This study treats the Queen of Shebas visit to King Solomons court. To be more precise, it asks how and why the historic event, a diplomatic mission recorded by the biblical chronicler, was reshaped by later Jewish and Muslim writers to accommodate contemporary values and newly defined concerns. By the Middle Ages, the main focus of the queens visit had shifted from international to sexual politics and from diplomatic relations to the more complicated relations between men and women. That is, in its postbiblical and Islamic versions, the queens joust with Solomon was portrayed as a dangerous attempt to subvert time-honored rules of gender. -- For writers agitated by thoughts of an empowered distaff side, the queens coldness in confronting the great Solomon had wide ramifications. At the least, her presumption in testing the hegemony of men was viewed as a challenge to orderly society. Were, however, that challenge not enough to cause anxiety. Jewish and Muslim writers provoked their audiences with more ominous noughts. Combining arcane scholarship and a playful literary imagination, they transmuted the historic Queen of Sheba, a clever and politically astute sovereign, into a demonic force seeking to dissolve all boundaries of gender. In doing that, they linked the queens striving for political power with the wholesale dissolution of sexually differentiated tasks. Seen in that light, her contest with the great Solomon was not a matter of redefining roles so as to allow women an honored place in the political arena. There was the danger that given political parity, if not advantage, she would tamper with the very essence f Gods design. Any such attempt to alter natures equilibrium was perceived as an obvious threat to all of humankind because, once liberated from their natural function, women may well decide against child rearing and even reproduction. Hence, the queens brazen disregard for the roles that God assigned women resonated to concerns openly shared by all who had a stake in the continuity of the human species.
