First Edition Signed
Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt and blue spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. vi, 314pp. Very good/good plus. Jacket well edgeworn, with several small edge chips. A tight and nice first edition of this study by the influential political activist and theorist, academic, democratic socialist and all-around gadfly (1928-89) best remembered for his controversial bestseller "The Other America: Poverty in the United States" (1962) and for founding the Democratic Socialists of America party. This copy bears a large, bold and choice presentation inscription by him in blue ballpoint on front flyleaf: "To Carl and Marian / it has been / good to have been / in this struggle with / you for such a / long time -- and / soon I hope some / of our ideas will / come true. / With hope, / Mike." Carl Shier (1918-2007) was a Chicago-area labor leader; he and his wife Marian appear in Maurice Isserman's 2000 biography "The Other America: The Untold Life of Michael Harrington." Harrington titles aren't often found signed, and this fine personal inscription is exceptionally unusual.
