Degas wirkt darauf wie der vollkommene Bourgeois, oder, in… den Worten des kubistischen Malers Andre Lhote, wie ?ein verheerend unbestechlicher Buchhalter". Degas trägt die uniforme Begräbniskleidung des männlichen Großbürgers des 19.Jahrhunderts, die sie in den Worten Baudelaires wie ?ein enormes Gefolge der vom Leichengräber bestellten Totenkläger" aussehen ließ, und lüftet höflich seinen Zylinder, während er vorsichtig den forschenden Blick des Betrachters erwidert. Ein einige Jahre zuvor aufgenommenes Photo (Abb.2), das sich in der Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris befindet, zeigt eine ähnliche Darstellung, obwohl darauf seine Haltung angespannter und verlegener als auf dem Gemälde wirkt. Auf dem Photo hält Degas , I seinen Zylinder mit einer Geste über seinen Schoß, die unbeabsichtigt an den Bauern in Millets Angelus erinnert. Dali deutete die unbequeme Pose des Bauern provokativ als den Versuch, eine aufkommende Erektion zu verbergen.
