Stated "Second Printing" About the book (from the dust jacket) The school was nothing great, It was old, grubby and crowded, but it was Jim's school. It had taken a whole day to find a classroom for him and even then there had been no desk. Now, just as he was getting used to it, he was told there was no room, that he would have to go to still another school. Jim was willing, he was used to being moved. The new school might be better. His friend Larry was sure there was nothing better. Not until he got out of school, not until he showed the world his anger would anything be better, "You're stupid," said Larry. "You actually trust people and think things will get better if you just pray Or something." Jim's grandmother had done the praying His mother had stirred up the neighborhood, and something was going to happen. This is a real experience. Larry and Jim, his mother and grandmother are real people. This is the way Dr. Coles saw it happen in one American city. As he tells it and Norman Rockwell illustrates it, the experience is unforgettable. About the author (from the dust jacket) Dr. Robert Coles is a child psychiatrist who has been deeply involved in the problems of school desegregation in both southern and northern cities. His observations have been published widely in newspapers and magazines and in a recent book, CHILDREN OF CRISIS: A Study of Courage and Fear, which won the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award of Phi Beta Kappa in 1967 About the illustrator (from the dust jacket) Norman Rockwell worked closely with the author on illustrations for the book. His inimitable style adds to the realism of a moving experience. Rockwell, Norman (illustrator).
