"This the story of one man's vision, the vision of Frederick Craufurd Goodenough, chairman of Barclays Bank Limited, who conceived a plan, as far back as 1919, of a banking organization which would span the globe under the name of Barclays. It is a remarkable story with few parallels in the field of commercial banking enterprise. Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas), later to be known as Barclays Bank DCO, came into being by the amalgamation in 1925 of three banks, the oldest of which was the Colonial Bank, established in 1836. A Banking Centenary, printed in 1938, outlined the histories of the three constituent banks and of the first years of the amalgamated entity. A Bank in Battledress followed in 1947 to tell of the bank's important and difficult role in Africa and elsewhere during the Second World War. This volume surveys as a whole the development of 'DCO' from the time of its creation by F. C. Goodenough as an 'empire bank' to its emergence as a truly international bank - Barclays Bank International Limited.".
