First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Laid in loose is an unpublished 3-page typed manuscript by Hugo Manning (with a few holograph corrections), ca. 1952, which appears to have been intended as jacket text for a projected edition of 'The Unpossessed Garden'. It includes a quirky, punchy author biography and list of works, selected reviews, and some hilarious text at the end (describing himself as 'modest and self-effacing'). The manuscript of 'The Unpossessed Garden' survives at the University of Texas at Austin, and appears unpublished. Manning describes it both as an oratorio and as a 'modern poem, adhering to the bible narrative but given my own interpretation and conception of the man-woman drama and an attempt to touch the anatomy of desire.' First edition in original light grey cloth stamped in red (cloth has some staining and wear; foxing to text; ink inscription of prior owners on front endpaper; no jacket).
