We have sketches of 19th century Cranford society; of the tragedy of the genial but noisy Captain Brown; of Miss Matty's unhappy romance; of the panic caused by a succession of purely fictitious robberies; of the flutter due to the visit of Lady Glemire, the widow of a Scottish baron. The episodes, however, are of secondary importance to the characters and customs of the day, delightfully presented. Wear and tear to D/J.
